Google Cloud has announced its plans to launch its first cloud region in New Zealand, joining expansion plans that already include Malaysia, Mexico, Thailand, Berlin, Dammam, Doha, Tel Aviv, and Turin. With the launch of the New Zealand cloud region, local businesses will have the option to keep their data onshore, retain data sovereignty, and push forward with their digital efforts locally with speed, security, and scalability. According to a recent report by AlphaBeta, digital transformation could create up to NZD$46.6 billion in economic value by 2030, if leveraged fully. This will be Google Cloud’s third region in Australasia, joining Sydney and Melbourne and in total, Google Cloud has 11 cloud regions currently operating in JAPAC.
In total, Google Cloud will launch three zones in the New Zealand region with the goal of delivering high-performance, low-latency services to local customers. The company already has a Dedicated Cloud Interconnect in Auckland to support New Zealand customers.
“For over 15 years our team has been working closely with businesses, communities and educators in New Zealand to support them with the skills they need to succeed in a digital future,” said Caroline Rainsford, Country Director, Google New Zealand. “Bringing a new cloud region to Aotearoa shows Google’s increasing investment and will allow us to partner more deeply with local businesses, to deliver on our unique ability to bring enterprise and consumer ecosystems closer together – across Search, YouTube, Cloud – to deliver more powerful customer experiences, quickly and securely.”
Recently, Google announced in its earning reports that its Cloud division saw revenue grow 36 percent year-over-year to $6.28 billion.
