As more and more vehicles offer connected experiences, automakers and automotive parts manufacturers are turning to the cloud for better management of their data. Amazon now offers AWS IoT Fleetwise, a service that’s designed to collect, transform, and transfer vehicle data to the cloud in near real time. This allows companies to use that data to improve vehicle safety, quality, and autonomy. Companies already using AWS IoT Fleetwise include Hyundai Motor Group, Bridgestone, LG CNS, and Renesas Electronics Corporation.
Today’s modern vehicles are equipped with a number of sensors that collect large amounts of data — upwards of 2 terabytes per hour. This is especially true for vehicles that have semi-autonomous driving features, like Tesla Autopilot or GM’s Super Cruise. Naturally, those automakers want to collect, standardize, and analyze all that data quickly and the cloud helps enable that. That data being collected can be used to improve the vehicle’s functionalities, and in the case of self-driving features, improve safety and reliability.

Not surprisingly, transferring all that data to the cloud can get expensive and time consuming. In addition, automakers would have to build custom data-collection systems in order to collect, transform, and analyze all that data. That too, can get expensive and time consuming. Ultimately, data is only valuable if it can actually be used and that’s where AWS IoT Fleetwise can help.
With the relatively new service, companies are able to access, structure, and standardize proprietary vehicle data without having to create a custom data-collection system. AWS IoT Fleetwise can also be integrated with existing systems. The service allows companies to select the exact data they need and create rules to determine which data is actually transferred to the cloud for further analysis. AWS provided an example of how the service can be used: “automotive companies can collect data from electric-vehicle batteries when the temperature drops below freezing and then analyze it and run simulations in the cloud to improve battery performance in cold weather.”
For those who pay attention to the automotive industry, you’ll know more and more automakers are shifting their production towards electric vehicles. These high-tech cars are packed full of advanced sensors to ensure the vehicle performs optimally in all conditions. Many EVs are also equipped with semi-autonomous driving features, driven by Tesla’s investment in its Autopilot system.
As more automakers turn to high-tech and connected features for their vehicles, it’s little surprise Amazon has created AWS for Automotive, featuring purpose-built automotive solutions like AWS IoT Fleetwise. Currently, the new service is generally available in U.S. East (N. Virginia) and Europe (Frankfurt), but additional AWS Regions are coming soon. To learn more about AWS IoT Fleetwise, click here.
“Automotive companies want to use the broad portfolio of AWS services to help manage the vast amounts of data coming from connected vehicles, but they have lacked a solution that made it easier to collect, transform, and transfer data to the cloud,” said Mike Tzamaloukas, general manager of IoT automotive at AWS. “Now, with AWS IoT FleetWise, customers can easily pinpoint the exact vehicle data they need and analyze it in a standardized format to gain actionable insights into the vehicle’s health status and performance. Automotive companies can now use the data extracted through AWS IoT FleetWise to help improve vehicle quality, safety, and autonomy.”
