How-to Easily Migrate Data from Google Cloud to Azure Storage

Are you or your business currently using Google Cloud and considering the move to Azure Storage? Worried about the process of copying or migrating your data? Worry not, as it can easily be done through AzCopy, a command-line utility that allows you to copy blobs or files to or from a storage account. In this article, we’ll give you a brief overview of how AzCopy works and how it can be useful in migration and multi-cloud scenarios.

To start, you’ll need to download the AzCopy executable file and it is recommended to add the directory location of the AzCopy executable to your system path so you can run azcopy from any directory on your system. But before you can use AzCopy, you’ll have to provide authorization credentials to the storage service. This can be done by using either Azure Active Directory (AD) or by using a Shared Access Signature (SAS) token. You will also need to authorize with Google Cloud Storage by using a service account key.

When using AzCopy, data is copied directly between Google Cloud Storage and storage servers by using the Put Block From URL API. Therefore, copying the data won’t use any network bandwidth from your computer. One key thing to note is that Azure blob containers have a different set of naming conventions than bucket names on Google Cloud storage. As a result, copying a group of buckets to an Azure storage account may fail because of those naming differences. You can how to handle the differences here.
